‘Inside Out 2’ Scores Best Second Weekend Ever For An Animated Film
Disney is reporting an even $100 million for the second weekend domestic gross of Inside Out 2.
The $100m figure is an estimate, but even if the final tally dips below that amount when the actual numbers are reported on Monday, it is still guaranteed to become the highest-grossing second weekend ever for an animated film. The previous record was last year’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which scored $92.3m in it second frame. (UPDATE: The final weekend figure was $101.2 million.)
Over its first 10 days, the Kelsey Mann-directed IO2 has grossed $355.1m domestic, making it the highest-grossing American film of 2024.
The box office story is equally spectacular abroad where the film has now grossed $369.2m from 45 territories.
In Spain, IO2 started with $13.1m, the best-ever launch for an animated film, while in France it opened with $12.8m, the biggest-ever for a Pixar title. In Brazil, the $17.3m opening is the second-best ever for a film and it is already the highest-grossing pic of the year.
Top five foreign markets so far are Mexico ($69.3m), U.K. ($29.2m), South Korea ($29m), Germany ($17.9m), and Brazil ($17.3m).
Global total for IO2 stands at $724.3m, surpassing Dune: Part Two ($711.8m) as the top-grossing global release of 2024 to date. At this point, IO2 is guaranteed to be a one-billion grosser, so the question that remains is whether it can top Incredibles 2’s $1.24 billion global to become Pixar’s highest-grossing title of all time.
In other box office news, The Garfield Movie remained at no. 4 in the U.S. during its fifth weekend of release. The film has grossed a healthy $85.1m domestic, on its way to $230.6m global. It is now the highest-grossing Garfield movie ever released, besting 2004’s Garfield: The Movie ($208m).
Neon expanded Robot Dreams to 90 theaters this weekend, earning $126,053. The film has grossed $439,888 to date during its U.S. run.
